My name is Melissa Phua Siew Mei and I am currently pursuing my first year degree in Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in Taylor's University Lakeside Campus. I am 19 years old and my hometown is in Miri, Sarawak. I enjoy reading and writing short stories as my past time activities back in my hometown. I am a very motivated person and I have a set of goals for myself which I intend to accomplish for now and also in the future. Any setbacks that come my way will be overcomed because I do not give up easily when it comes to achieving my dreams. Coming to Kuala Lumpur to pursue my education would be my very first time living away from home. Unlike the city, my hometown is a very small and peaceful town. The citizens of Miri are very friendly and we form a close knitted society where everyone knows one another. Coming to Kuala Lumpur has definitely opened up my horizons towards many new experiences. I am exposed to a whole new environment and the people here are very sociable thus I had no troubles fitting in. I am very privileged to be given the chance to experience new things and also learn to live independently. The decision to enroll in Medical School was partly my own and also due to positive influences from my family and peers. It has been a wonderful journey for me so far being in medical school. It definitely challenges me to step beyond my comfort zone to continuously learn and absorb new things everyday. Of course, certain hitches along the way cannot be avoided especially during the initial phase after entering the degree program but I am very grateful for this opportunity to be able to be pursuing this career.
