CLINICAL SKILLS
Clinical skills is introduced starting from the system blocks in which medical students are exposed to various steps in which history taking are being done in helping to diagnose a patient’s condition. Basically, in consultation, four basic steps to be carried out are inspection, palpation, percussion and auscultation (with the use of stethoscope). In the hematology block, we were taught on the various ways of administering drugs through the peripheral route such as IV injections, IM injections, subcutaneous injections and also the procedures of injecting a canula. Besides that, we were also taught on the processes of how blood is drawn from the body. The specific locations for these injections are very important as different regions of the body are more inclined to a certain type of injections. We were taught on the steps in obtaining the history taking from patients suffering from blood disorders where we have to obtain their past medical history, personal history, family history presenting complain and the factors aggravating, alleviating and affecting their conditions. As for cardiovascular block, we learned on how to obtain history takings from a patient suffering from heart diseases. Besides that, we also learned on the correct steps to do inspections and auscultate our patients properly. The aseptic technique of hand washing and gloving before attending a surgery was also taught. We also learned on the abnormalities of heart sounds heard in diagnosing a patient with a particular disorder. Finally, the last subtopic that was covered in Cardiovascular Block was cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) where we learned the proper way to deliver CPR to resuscitate a patient while waiting for the arrival of emergency help.
