Integrated Science Project (ISP) is the final science project for the second semester of Foundation in Science in which specific lecturers are assigned to different groups to assist them as facilitators in carrying out their research projects. The project involves different branches of science such as chemistry, biology or physics. My group chose a topic called Phytoremediation which is the usage of plants to mitigate environmental problems. Certain types of plants have the ability to excavate contaminant material and dispose of it elsewhere. These plants are able to absorb heavy metals and dispose of them into the environment in the form of non-toxic, organic materials. We encountered many problems in carrying out the project because our group comprises of only 3 members. With the workload, we had to segregate the work amongst us and ended up with a lot to do. However, our lecturers Mr. Jason and Ms. Sri were very supportive and helpful in guiding us through the whole process. We managed to handle our project smoothly and during the day of the exhibition, many people were impressed by our research because it is something that was never really proposed before. Therefore, the idea of using natural resources ie. plants in excavating contaminant material from the environment is considered fresh and forms a foundation towards achieving a healthier environment to live in. I am very touched and grateful to my fellow members as well for their dedication, hard work and cooperation in ensuring that this project is made a success.
